About the Book.

A sweeping, tenderhearted love story, Beyond That, the Sea by Laura Spence-Ash tells the story of two families living through World War II on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and the shy, irresistible young woman who will call them both her own.

About the Author.

Laura Spence-Ash’s debut novel, Beyond That, The Sea, was published by Celadon Books in March 2023. Her short fiction has appeared in One Story, New England Review, Crazyhorse and elsewhere. She has received fellowships and support from MacDowell, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, and Sewanee Writers’ Conference. About the Moderator. 

Patrick Ryan is the author of the novel Buckeye (forthcoming from Random House in the summer of 2025). His short story collection, The Dream Life of Astronauts, was named one of the Best Books of the Year by the St. Louis Times-Dispatch, LitHub, Refinery 29, and Electric Literature, and was longlisted for The Story Prize. His debut collection of linked short stories, Send Me, was selected for Barnes & Noble’s Discover New Writers program. His writing has appeared in The Best American Short Stories, the anthology Tales of Two Cities, and elsewhere. Patrick is a recipient of writing fellowships from MacDowell, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Liguria Study Center. He is also the author of three novels for young adults. The former associate editor of Granta and current editor-in-chief of One Story, he lives in New York City.
